Oakland, CA - Dellums agrees to pay cut, 20% staff reduction

Dellums agrees to pay cut, 20% staff reduction: "(06-16) 18:10 PDT -- A plan to dramatically revise Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums' proposed budget didn't get much opposition from the mayor Tuesday.

'I am in no way interested in a fight at a time of significant economic despair and economic problems,' Dellums said in his first comments since four council members proposed an alternative Friday that slashed the mayor's staff budget. 'This is a time we need to close ranks.'"

Unknown is the fate of the Police Department.

The current staffing of around 810 officers is funded through October, according to Quan. But the city is counting on federal grant money to fund 140 positions. If that money doesn't come through, and the force drops below 739 officers, the department would lose funding for 63 more officers because of restrictions placed by Measure Y, a city ballot measure. That would mean a loss of 203 officers.
