BOSTON - March 05, 2009 - Police Commissioner Ed Davis outlined the cuts in a memo to the department.
Forty police cadets will be laid off as of July 1st of this year.
The Police Mounted Unit will be disbanded. Ten civilians who work at the stables in Jamaica Plain will be laid off. The 10 officers assigned to the unit, as well as its supervisor, will be re-assigned.
Also, the unit responsible for taking calls for minor offenses and property crimes will be disbanded. Those calls will now be handled by the districts, and 10 civilians will be laid off.
The memo does say federal funds made available to the city has decreased the likelihood and scope of the layoffs for sworn personnel, although no final decisions can be made until the status of federal funding has been determined and negotiations with the police unions has been completed."
