"Some states are attempting to crack down on the practice of 'double-dipping,' even though the practice is legal in nearly every state under existing pension and hiring rules.

USA Today reported last July that letting government workers collect pension benefits while continuing to work for a salary is especially common among educators, police officers and others who retire young after 20 to 30 years on the job.

Supporters of double-dipping say rehiring retirees is a cost-effective way to tap experience. But some states are looking at ways to adjust the rules, tipping the balance more in favor of the taxpayers, who gasp at some of the more egregious deals that especially high paid public officials sometimes get."
