The city said today it will hike pay 5 percent for many police and firefighters on October 1 in order to 'remain competitive' with other governments.
The move comes almost three months after the city again cut back on retiree health benefits, prompting some retired police officers to say the city had broken its pledge -- and a key recruitment tool -- to provide free health care for life"
